ICI Student Chapter arranges workshop : "Journey through the Concrete Jungle"

A workshop was conducted on 30th July, 2016 by the Indian Concrete Institute Student Chapter of Amal Jyothi College of Engineering, Kanjirappally in Alphonsa Hall. The official meeting started at 2 PM in the afternoon. The event began with a prayer song after which ICI acting coordinator Asst. Prof. Danny Thomas welcomed the Chief Guest of the day Prof. Cyrus Minocher Dordi (Adjunct professor in IIT Bombay) and Mr. Shelly S Fernandez, HOD of Civil Engg. Dept. Prof. Sr. Claramma Rosary, Mr. Aaron Thomas Varghese (ICI students Representative) and all others who had gathered for  the meeting and presented the ICI previous activities and Amal Jyothi College of Engineering participation.

Next was inaugural speech by Fr. Rev. Jose Kannampuzha (Principal, AJCE). He motivated the students with his speech and advised them to make best use of the opportunity and requested the students to be concrete rather than being an abstract. He explains about the field of explore in concrete area with different invention and new techniques.  In his speech, father mentioned about the importance of using concrete in an eco-friendly manner. This was followed by a felicitation from Mr. Shelly S Fernandez who is the former chairman of ICI Cochin Chapter.

Then the chief guest Prof. Cyrus Minocher Dordi took charge and delivered a wonderful lecture on Construction. A nostalgic journey through his humble college life in IIT Bombay and his early life in the construction industry tells us to cherish the little moments in life. Using the Analog of a forest i.e. the hierarchy of different animals in the co-operate construction world and how we can effectively traverse this Jungle and how to survive. He explained how the practical knowledge & theoretical knowledge go hand in hand often completing each other.

He discussed about the important laws of concrete jungle like
·     Concrete Mix design and its application on site
·         Formwork design, Reinforcement layout and site checks.
·         Importance of workability and its relation to w/c.
·         Minimum cement content and maximum w/c (Durability).
·         Execution of concreting operation on site and importance of curing.

The session lasted for a couple of hours at the end of it Mr Dordi was presented with a memento by Mr T.K Georgekutty. The vote of thanks was delivered by Mr Roger Samuel. The training program came to an end by 4:00 PM.

We have our “National Technology Day” on May 11, which is celebrated every year to commemorate the achievements of scientists, researchers, engineers and all others involved in the field of science and technology, reminding Indians about the technological advancements made by the country.
